Whilst having a puppy is such a rewarding experience, without proper training your puppy may never grow out of the habit of biting. Time and time again people come to me to ask how to get a puppy to stop biting. There are many techniques on how to stop a puppy from biting, but what you must remember is that puppies bite and chew a lot at a young age. It is only when this natural behavior escalates into something out of hand that you should think of addressing how to get a puppy to stop biting.

The first method of how to stop a puppy from biting involves simple obedience training with water. This method can work, but only if you are around the dog enough to identify the bad behavior and act when it is taking place. If you can’t be around when it is biting but you still want to know how to stop a puppy from biting this method is not for you. However, if you are often at home and are quick to act this can be a very effective way of how to stop a puppy from biting. To achieve this you must get a water gun, hose, or iron sprayer and simply spray the dog lightly when it is doing something wrong. Although many dogs like water, catching them off guard with a quick spray of water is a very effective method to stop your puppy from biting. Make sure you catch the puppy whilst it is in the act of biting (for example chewing up your shoes), otherwise the puppy will not understand.

Another approach that addresses the question of how to get a puppy to stop biting is the yelp approach. If the problem is the puppy biting you or other people in your household, (not items around the house), this method is far more effective than saying “NO” or getting angry at your pet. Since puppies play like this with their pack, if you yelp when they bite you, the puppy will think that they bit you too hard and will stop biting (as it is usually a game for them). If you use the yelping technique you will find it very effective in addressing the problem of how to stop a puppy from biting, as it doesn’t intimidate the dog or confuse it, it is using pack mentality in order to stop the puppy.

A third and final approach on how to get a puppy to stop biting is the orange peel method. Dogs hate orange peel, so if you put orange peel on whatever the dog is biting, it will instantly turn the dog away from the object. After a while the dog will realize that biting and chewing things is wrong if they cannot achieve this. White pepper is also sometimes used for this purpose. Both of these can be effective. But overall, remember that if you are asking how to stop a puppy from biting it is probably just a passing phase; most puppies soon grow out of this and with a little training won’t continue biting in later life.

Imagine seeing this entry at an online dating site: “Avid swimmer, EBLD seeking lifetime relationship. Must haves: long runs in the park; exciting games of ball or Frisbee; constant attention. Must not haves: someone who’s too busy for me; someone who’ll put me in the doghouse.”

Who is EBLD? An Energetic Black Lab Dog! If you’re thinking of getting one, you’re going to want to know how to take care of a black Lab dog. And if you think you can take care of a black lab dog with little time, think again. This dog belongs with owners that are willing to spend time with and for it.

Attention

The most important factor in the care of a black Lab is attention. A black Lab will do without a lot of things, but it will not do without attention. A black Lab simply will not be ignored.

The Labrador Retriever is one of the most lovable, even-tempered dogs there is. He wants to share his immense supply of love with his owners, and can’t imagine they won’t take time to reciprocate.

Labrador Retrievers are also highly intelligent dogs. They can quickly sense reluctance on their owners’ part to spend time with them. They are eager to please, and use their intelligence to please you. In return, your care of a black Lab must include plenty of energetic play, and intelligent interaction.

Microchip

It is not essential to the care of a black Lab to have a microchip inserted, but it does provide a level of protection if your retriever strays.

Exercise

To provide good care of a black Lab, you will need to give it regular, daily exercise in large doses. Plan on 30 to 60 minutes daily as a minimum. Your black Lab will love to have 30 minutes morning and evening if possible.

Exercise should be varied. Include walks, on or off leash. Work in games of fetch (to allow you to breathe while he races!). Incorporate obedience or hunting training into your care of a black Lab and he will be able to exercise his intelligence, too.

Be sure the exercise is regular, as your black Lab’s boundless energy must find an outlet. If the outlet is not exercise, it may be destructive behavior.

Preventative Care

You should not limit your care of a black Lab to its present needs. You can forestall certain medical concerns, such as hip dysphasia, by giving the Labrador preventative care. Begin preventative care of a black Labrador when you first get the dog. First, check with the breeder to be sure the puppy’s parents are free of genetic problems. The puppy should have had its first shots and worming. Take it to a veterinarian for a check-up, and continue to take it for “wellness” visits.

Maintain preventative health care of a black lab by having your vet include, minimally: checks for external and internal parasites, inoculations, and heart worm preventative.

Food

The cook involved in the care of a black Lab must consider several things.

1. Black Labrador Retrievers will eat almost anything – think goat! To take care of a Black Lab, you need to guard against it eating junk.

2. The best food to give when taking care of a black Lab is real food. Give it real meat, raw or cooked: beef, chicken, and turkey. Give it fresh raw fruits and vegetables. Mix in brown rice and oatmeal for fiber, eggs and yogurt. Commercial dog foods, unknown before 1930, seem to exist as an outlet for rejected grains and meats that could not be sold to humans.

3. Watch your Labrador’s intake. If you really want to take proper care of a black Lab, you will not let it become overweight, risking heart disease, arthritis, and other health problems.

Grooming

You won’t need a professional groomer to take care of a Black Lab’s coat, but you should not assume the dog needs no grooming. Black Labradors shed a lot in spring and autumn, but they need to be groomed year-round.

To take proper care of a black Lab’s coat, you will need a narrow-toothed comb, short-haired rake, toenail clippers, wide-toothed comb, and a wire slicker brush. A bristle brush is nice for distributing oils when your Lab is not shedding.

Proper care of a black Lab will require daily grooming during seasonal blowing of the coat. The job is not nearly as large if done daily, and the sooner you remove dead hair, the sooner new hair can grow. Use the short-haired rake first, to rake out dead hairs. Use the wire slicker brush to get what the rake missed. Use the wide-toothed comb lightly to loosen matted hairs. The next step proves how intent you are on proper care of a black Lab. Go over the entire dog carefully with your narrow-toothed comb! Finish the job with your bristle brush to catch loose hairs.

Aside from spring and autumn’s major shedding periods, your Retriever will need to be brushed twice a week. Cut its toenails once every month to avoid foot problems.

Most dogs very expressive and affectionate social animals. That is why they jump when they greet. The main reason why most dogs jump is simply out of excitement: its an enthusiastic greeting, reserved for times when adrenalines running high and the dogs happy about something.

Jumping is also encouraged by a lot of dog owners when the dog is a puppy. They reward the jumping puppy by reacting with exuberant affection, hugs and kisses. The puppy learns a fast lesson: jumping is a good thing, because it results in plenty of positive attention and physical contact.Your dog doesnt understand the difference between a jump as a small, cute puppy, and a jump as a huge, hairy adult. If you want to stop your dog from jumping on people, youll need to take matters into your own hands, and make it perfectly clear to your dog that jumping is not acceptable any more.

Most trainers agree that the most effective way to stop your dog from jumping on people is also the easiest: all you have to do is simply ignore him whenever he jumps. The idea is to give him the cold shoulder: withdraw all attention, even negative attention (so no yelling, shoving, or corrections).

Heres how to implement this training technique: whenever your dog jumps up on you, turn your back straight away. Since dogs understand body language a lot more clearly than they do the spoken word, youre going to be using your posture to convey the message that such behavior isnt acceptable here: fold your arms, turn your back from him and look away.

This is where a lot of people make a mistake: they confuse ignoring the behavior with ignoring the dog. Youre not ignoring the behavior - i.e., youre not carrying on with whatever you were doing as if the jumping wasnt happening; youre ignoring your dog. Youre still going to react; but your reaction is for you to actively ignore him.The cold shoulder is a really effective way of communicating your displeasure to a dog - hell catch on in no time.

If you apply this technique consistently and tell all the people that are in contact with the dog to do the same, you will quickly stop your dog from jumping on people.

Some dogs jump on people because of dominance or aggression issues. If this is the case you will need to address this problem separately.

If you want to learn more advanced techniques about how to stop your dog from jumping on people and to help you with other very common behavior problems, check http://www.squidoo.com/sitstayfetch_review where you will be able to get a free 6 day mini course.

Part of the responsibility of pet ownership includes making sure your dog is well-trained. Training a dog is a long process that will require you to learn a lot about canine behavior. Ahead you will find some tips for getting the most from your dog training efforts.

If any sudden behavioral issue occurs, take the dog to the vet to make sure that there is not a health issue involved. Sometimes pain and other health conditions can cause some animals to act strangely or lash out. Animals cant tell us when something is wrong, so they depend on us to interpret their behaviors.

When training your dog, do not include any punishments. Taking preventative measures to avoid the occurrence of a bad behavior to begin with is always best, however, if your dog does get out of line, demonstrate how it should have been done rather than scolding him. Training your dog is a great way to develop a positive relationship with him.

Stay with the training, so that he doesnt forget the lessons that he learned. Keep him in practice. A lot of times owners thing training is a one time event. You can encourage your dog to adopt good habits. That is why it is vital to ensure your dog maintains a strict rule system.

When training your dog, always remember to have fun. Playing with your dog helps build a stronger bond between dog and human, which encourages the dog to respond positively during training. Although dog training can be fun, you dont really want to spend all your time in training mode.

Stop your puppy immediately if he is chewing on something he shouldnt. This will help your puppy to learn what things he is allowed to chew and what he is not. He will then be less likely to chew on your belongings and instead will turn to his toys when he wants to chew.

If your dog suffers from separation anxiety when youre away, encourage him to bond with other members of the household. This will help it be less focused on the fact that you are not home.

During the dog training process, it is a good idea to use various treats as rewards for your dogs good behavior. Do not use the treats that you would give your dog day to day. They should be specific to training and ensuring the feeling of being rewarded for something specific. The dog will also be more likely to obey if they know they will receive something special.

Use consistency with training by making sure all members use commands that are the same. For instance, if your dog gets on the sofa and he hears you saying "get off," but your husband says "down boy", it may confuse your dog. As long as you use consistency, then your dog has a great chance of learning all of the tricks and behaviors that you wish.

While training your puppy or dog to use a crate, introduce him to new concepts slowly and gradually, so he is able to adjust to the changes without feeling stressed. As soon as they start to feel comfortable in the crate when the door is open, try closing the gate and have them eat inside. Start off with small periods, for example 10 seconds or so, and gradually increase crate time. If your puppy gets upset, then you may need to slow down and have more patience with them.

You wont get anywhere in your dog training routine if your dog feels unsafe. If they do not feel safe, they may show bad behavior. Make your dogs surroundings comfortable and safe in order for this not to happen.

Its a good idea to keep in mind the number of treats you are giving your dog throughout the day. Giving him too many will add unneeded calories to his diet and cause him to become overweight. Many people overlook treats when considering the animals diet, but they certainly add up, especially during active training.

When house-breaking your puppy, choose a specific phrase to use when its time to go outdoors. When you take your dog out, repeat this command. This will help him form an association between being taken outside and doing his business.

Creating good behavior in your dog can be achieved by consistent treatment from all the people who interact with him on a daily basis. Your dog needs consistent lessons everyday. Make sure that everyone who trains your dog does it in the same manner as you in order to avoid confusion.

Try to use the same words or actions when you are training your dog. A dog will respond to this positively, as they will start to associate that action or word with each kind of behavior. Remember to be consistent about what commands you use and what behaviors you expect in every training session. The more consistent you are, the more likely you are to successfully train your dog to obey your commands.

Be sure to feed your dog healthy foods and treats. If the dogs diet is poor, it is not good for their health. If your dog isnt getting what it needs to stay healthy, it could really struggle to find the energy for training or may act out in other ways. Training may very well go easier when dogs are given the proper nutrients in a healthful diet.

Large dogs that prefer to lie down on their backs or stretch, out should have a big bed to get comfortable in. Large, flat rectangle beds are made for large dogs. You can also get a little creative, and just buy a mattress made for a babys crib. Simply utilize fitted crib sheets to cover it. They can be removed and washed very easily. These mattresses are usually waterproof also.

You should not initiate a training session unless you are in a calm and patient mood. Be patient when training your puppy, so you can both stay focused.

Do not tie a couple of dogs closely together. The dogs could get wrapped up and they may be injured. If one dog happens to be much larger than the other, the small dog could get tangled to the point that it could choke to death.

You can prevent your dog from destroying your home by keeping it outdoors when you are away from the house. When this isnt possible, you want to provide things that both appeal to your dog and that are okay for the dog to chew on. Establishing acceptable chews toys is also about keeping those things you do not want your dog to chew up behind closed doors or well out out of reach.

Now that you have received the helpful advice in this article, you should now be aware how easy it is to train your dog. With patience and a little research, you can train your dog. The right training can help every dog thrive and be well behaved..

Like most dog owners, you are asking what do I do to get my dog to stop barking? There are many techniques on how to make a dog stop barking. As an owner of a pet myself, I tried everything to get my dog to stop barking. The traditional methods seemed to work for a limited time, but after a while the dog just went back to its old habits. Since I really wanted to get my dog to stop barking I went on the search to find how to make a dog stop barking. If you are a concerned dog owner such as myself, you will be asking these questions. There are many solutions, and these will be covered in turn.

Firstly, there are various dog collars and sprays which can be used. Unfortunately, if your dog is older these may not be as effective as training your dog when it is young. The most important part of how to make a dog stop barking is training your dog. Although sprays may work in certain situations it does not avoid the underlying problems such as dog anxiety which causes the barking problems.

Secondly, you can send your dog to obedience training. This can vary in effectiveness and can be costly for many people, I didn’t use this to get my dog to stop barking, but many have. If you have a puppy it is most effective, and most of these obedience classes are designed for young dogs. There are cheaper classes for puppies, sometimes referred to as “puppy preschools” where you and your dog go and learn the basics of obedience training and pet socialization (including how to make a dog stop barking) which often prevents problems such as barking happening later down the track. If you have an older dog sometimes you will need specialized obedience classes for problem dogs; these are likely to cost more money and be a lot more straining on your and your pets time, particularly when you are trying to address how to make a dog stop barking.

Third and finally, you can undertake the obedience training yourself. This is what I did to get my dog to stop barking. This is by far the most effective way as unlike obedience training which often leaves you out of the picture, if you do the obedience training yourself, you will be the one the dog listens to when you are trying to make a dog stop barking. Getting the knowledge to get my dog to stop barking was simple, I used a guide I purchased on the internet, but there are many paths that you can take to train your own dog. In the end, this is the cheapest, most effective and amazingly, the least time consuming of the lot. I have bred dogs for years and used various methods, but now all I do is train my own dogs with a few proven techniques provided by experts.

If you are ever asking how do I get my dog to stop barking, next time consider some simple training steps, it will save you the time, hassle and money; and in my experience is the best method out there.

Shih Tzu puppies are arguably the cutest and most lovable pets one could dream of owning. Their friendly and lively personality makes them the perfect pet. Many hope to have a one as a pet, but where does one start to look to own one? How do you avoid those breeders who are asking outrageous amounts of money for a "special" breed? Better yet, where do you find free Shih Tzu puppies?! I have some ideas.

1.) Check out your local newspapers classifieds

Sometimes you can get lucky and find free Shih Tzu puppies by browsing the pets section of the classifieds in your local newspaper. This can be rare, but even if you cant find some, you might still be able to find puppies that are fairer priced. Also, dont be afraid to give the breeder a call to see if you can arrange for a lower price!

2.) Call your local or surrounding animal shelters or humane societies

Go ahead and pull out the phone book and call your local animal shelter or animal shelters in surrounding cities. They might be trying to find a home for any puppies theyve recently rescued or picked up. Not only is this a chance to find free Shih Tzu puppies but make a difference in ones life!

3.) Visit adoption and rescue websites online

Similar to calling animal shelters, a lot of websites online are focused to finding people to adopt or rescue a Shih Tzu. Again, this would not only be a great way to find free Shih Tzu puppies, but to provide companionship for a lost or abandoned dog. With adoption, you might only have to option to adopt an adult rather than a puppy.

However, there are many advantages to adopting an adult. You can read more about these advantages here.

While it isnt easy to find free Shih Tzu puppies, you arent obligated to paying outrageous prices to buy what breeders might advertise as a "special" breed of Shih Tzu. Check out all your options available before you settle on buying one from any single place.

If you have more questions about Shih Tzus, or owning a Shih Tzu, then check out Shih-Tzu-Information.com for more helpful articles like this one!

I train with food, toys, permission to pee on a post.. what ever the dog finds rewarding. I was at a trial a while back with Kat who was then 4 months. She was barking and screaming at all the other Jack Russells. I was clicking and treating for focusing on me. As she has the typical puppy attention span of about 10 seconds. So it was a lot of barking, focusing, getting treat. Someone dismissively said I was being a pez dispenser like it was a disappointing and horrible thing.

Interestingly enough at as the day went on Kat would start to react excitedly then stop and look at me. Which is exactly what I want. Other people were holding their dogs to the ground, yelling at them etc. Now I dont think those methods work particularly well.. but even if they did why would you choose to wrestle your dog to the cold wet ground or yell repeatedly at them jerking the leash vs feeding them a few treats?

Puppy

I have been breeding dogs for over 25 years and I still never get used to a puppy that gets sick and starts to die. This article deals with what I have learned about trying to save very young pups (under 2 weeks of age) when they get sick. As I write this article I have a 2 week old puppy in a box at my feet. Three days ago he weighed 264 grams. This evening he weighs 485 grams and is on his way back from the dead. This article is about what I did to save this pup. Maybe my experience will help you save some of your puppies in the future.

Before I begin I have to make the point that healthy puppies begin with prevention. I have written an article titled Save a Puppies Life which deals with a lot of things a breeder can do to keep dogs healthy. This article will talk about what to do when things go bad, and a puppy starts to go down hill.

Before I begin I also want to say that this program is not going to work on all pups. There are so many things that can make a puppy sick I could never begin to cover the entire scope of problems that come up. But I have proven through this protocol that some of these sick puppies can be saved with a little luck and attention to detail.

The first issue a breeder needs to deal with is to determine when a puppy is in distress and getting sick. I have to say that after 25 years and over 200 litters I can often look at a litter of puppies in a whelping box and spot a pup thats in distress or not doing well. New employees and breeders who dont have the luxury of this experience can accomplish the same thing with the use of a "gram scale." The fact is its impossible to know when a pup does not have a daily weight gain. No one (not even myself) can spot a pup who has not gained 10 or 20 grams a day. By using a gram scale and weighing pups you will be alerted to the first sign of a developing problem.

Heating Pad
Heating Pad

Here at my kennel if a pup is born small (around 300 grams) we automatically start a weight gain chart. Its weighed at least once a day and if there is any question on its energy and sucking ability it will be weighed twice a day. I begin a weight chart before I even begin to treat a pup.

Simply picking puppies up and handling them will also help point out a pup in distress Puppies will normally scream when they are picked up, but sick puppies have a different tone. Their scream is often louder and more forlorn. In addition, they will often begin to dehydrate. By becoming familiar with the feel of the skin of healthy pup, you will develop a feel for recognizing a dehydrated pup. You can easily feel the ribs and their skin feels like cardboard. It loses its elasticity and becomes stiff.

Dehydration kills pups in a hurry. They can do downhill and die in 24 hours. Dehydration is often caused from loose stools. If the mother is cleaning her pups, this can be hard to spot. What I look for is a puppy whose back end looks wet (or slick) even though it may be dry. The hair will look slicked down, and stuck together to give a wet look. If you see this you need to step in and help this pup.

The first thing to do is to begin to tube feed the pup. I initially tube with puppy milk replacer. Get it from your vet. Never use cows milk. Cows milk will give puppies diarrhea and make matters worse. I add a couple of "ccs" of Pepto Bismol or liquid Imodium AD. ( I prefer Imodium added to a tubing.) We need to settle the puppys stomach and bowls before dehydration take its toll. The Imodium or Pepto seems to do this most of the time. Depending on the circumstances I may administer an antibiotic. This is something to discuss with your vet. Amoxicillin or Clavomox are two very popular antibiotics that can be stored for a long time and easily administered with a normal tubing. These little bottles of antibiotic are cheap (under $10.00). They have a long shelf life because they come as a powder and are not active until water is added. Once water is added they must be kept in the fridge and are only good for 14 days.

Antibiotics
Add antibiotics to the tube feeding. (They should not be used
unless you consult your vet.)

Determining how often to tube and how much to tube needs to be properly calculated. A 300 gram puppy needs 15 ccs 4 times a day. Use the directions on the box and advice from your vet to determine how much to feed. It should be noted that once a pup is taken from the mother and tubed for a day or so they seem to lose the sucking instinct. This means you are in it for the long haul. It will have to be tube fed until its old enough to lap from a bowl (about 3 1/2 weeks of age).

Tubing is done with a catheter and a 30 cc syringe tube (no needle). You determine how far to insert the tube by holding the catheter next to the puppys side. Feel for the back of the rib cage to the tip of the nose. This is the length to insert the tube. Less than that will not get the liquid into the stomach, more than that may damage the stomach wall. You will often feel a slight resistance when the tube enters the stomach - this comes with practice. When you open the pups mouth, insert the tube on top of the middle of the tongue. People ask about getting it into the lungs. If there is any question, pull the tube out and reinsert it. But if you have marked your catheter length at the rib cage with a marker and inserted it all the way (without force) it can not be in the lungs; they are much closer to the dogs nose than his stomach.

I feel that when the puppy is really dehydrated and sick, one needs to be careful not to feed too much. When an adult dog has diarrhea your vet will often tell you to not feed them anything other than water for 24 hours. With pups I think we need to be careful. If its really not feeling good it needs nutrition, but we should not constantly pump food down its throat every 4 hours. I make a judgment call and will tube 10 to 15 cc of Lactated Ringers 2 to 3 hours after a formula feeding, especially if I feel I still have a dehydration problem. I think this helps flush the system. Water (or Lactated Ringers) will move through the pup much quicker than milk replacer. It will not cause the pup to back up with food. On the contrary, I think that it helps the digestion process. If any vets read this and disagree I certainly have an open mind on this issue. Maybe there is something better to use that has more electrolytes than Ringers.

While on the subject of medical attention from a vet, in regard to these very young puppies, my experience is that most vets are not going to be able to say "this is whats wrong." Pups that are sucking mothers milk and begin to fade are often a mystery to everyone involved. I spend between $500 and $800 a month on normal vet bills in my kennel and respect the heck out of my local vets. But when it comes to these small pups I no longer get a vet involved. I follow the protocol in this article. It works as many times as it fails and I am of the opinion that when it fails my vet could not have saved the pup, either.

Whelping Puppies and Their First 8 Weeks

If you get behind the 8 ball and a pup really gets dehydrated, you are going to have to deal with this. Simply tubing is often times not enough to bring the pup around. Fluids injected under the skin do more to improve hydration than simply giving oral fluids (thats why people get I Vs when they are dehydrated).

Go to your vet and get a bag of Lactated Ringers. (They are cheap only about $5.00). You will also need to get a 30 ccs syringe. A small pup (300 grams) will need to have 10 to 15ccs of Lactated Ringers injected under the skin (not in the muscle), twice a day, usually for a couple of days. Sticking small puppies with big needles is not easy. Its in the same category as sky diving or bungee jumping. Some people can simply not do it. They will have to go to the vet to get it done.

I have found that when a pup is really dehydrated this is a "do or die" situation. Under these circumstances I will do it but I dont like it. I accomplish this unpleasant task by picking the pup up with 2 fingers by the skin at the shoulders. This creates a pocket of skin. I insert the needle just below my fingers, making sure I dont hit a muscle and being careful not to push it all the way through both folds of skin. If you push it through both folds you have created a broken balloon effect. Pulling the needle back through the second fold of skin has created a hole and that area will not hold fluid. You will now have to try a different spot (which makes it even harder on your mind).

I only do this a few times until I see an improvement in the hydration. If he improves you will see an increase in the elasticity of the skin.

measuring a catheter for tube feeding a pup
Measuring a catheter for tube feeding a pup. Insert from the nose to the back edge of the ribs (feel for the rib line and mark the catheter).

During this entire process I take the pup away from the mother and keep it in a small 2 foot by 2 foot cardboard box. I find it easier to monitor the health when its in this box rather than when its left in with the litter. I lug the box around with me. I will keep it in my office or my secretaries office. I take it home at night and keep it next to the bed. That way I can get up in the middle of the night and give it a light tubing of either puppy milk replacer or Ringers (whichever I feel is more appropriate). When it comes to night feedings I usually let the puppy tell me when it is hungry. It will cry just like a baby. So rather than wake up every 4 or 4 1/2 hours and tube the pup at night I let it tell me what it needs.

Puppy Milk Replacer
The puppy milk replacer I like, (DO NOT USE COWS MILK.)

Its important to keep the pup warm without over heating it. Too warm only adds to your problems. Take an outside wall thermometer and lay it on the box to monitor the temperature. Some people use hot water bottles but I have found that a combination of a heating pad (set to LOW) under a 2 gallon zip lock bag filled with dry uncooked rice and beans works better. I make sure the box is big enough that the pup can get away from the heat source if it gets too warm. If it is healthy enough it will crawl off. If it is are too sick you will need to watch for them panting (or laying with their mouth open) and move it off.

There have been times when I have come into the kennel in the morning and found a pup moved off to the side of the litter. Its cold, flattened out and almost gasping for breath. This is a pup that is very close to dying. The first thing I try to do is warm the pup up. I do this by filling the sink with warm water and immersing the pup up to its neck in the water. I hold it in my hands until I feel that it is getting warm. This has worked for me in the past, but when a pup is that far gone it usually is going to die.

For normal heating, bags of rice are much better than hot water bottles. Uncooked rice and beans hold the heat longer than water. You can put the bag, with a couple of pounds of rice and beans in a microwave for 3 minutes, then shake the bag around to redistribute the heat and you have a very nice heat source for the pup. These bags also work wonders for your own stiff neck and shoulders (those cloth bags that are heated with microwaves that wrap around your neck are just bags of rice.)

Bag of Uncooked Rice
Use a Zip Lock bag of uncooked rice and beans heated in a
microwave to keep the pup warm.

Puppies must be kept at 85 degrees or greater for their digestive system to work properly

There are 2 important things that need to be done with sick puppies:

1. You need to constantly turn the pup over from one side to the other, kind of like a bird thats constantly turning the eggs in its nest. If you have ever seen a really sick pup in a whelping box (just before it dies), it flattens out. Turning and moving the pup will stop it from flattening out. I dont know that this is so important, but it does make a difference.

2. I also feel an important thing in the recovery of a sick puppy is to handle it a lot. Pet it, stroke it move it around. This helps the natural body functions of the puppy. I also think it helps its spirit. I believe that puppies need to have their spirit treated in addition to their health. Taking it away from it mother makes this process all the more important. Dont underestimate how important this aspect of the healing is. Hold it and cuddle it as much as possible. As I type this my puppy was crying. He had just been fed so it was not a hunger issue. Petting him did not stop the crying, but the very instant I picked him up and laid him on my chest he got quiet and went to sleep. Things like this never cease to amaze me.

Bringing a puppy back from the edge is a great feeling. Unfortunately too often a great deal of work does not work and the pup dies. Its hard to loose one of these little guys after days of close contact. We often think that the pup was just a little weak and needed our help to jump start it, but this is not always the case. When a pup dies I look at it like there was something seriously wrong that I didnt know about. When pups starts to fail, you never know if there is an internal abnormality or an unknown injury that has caused it to fail. I have learned to look at it like "I did my best but it was not in the cards for the pup to make it. Luck was not on its side." Thats the hard part about being a dog breeder.

One final point on this issue is that there is always the possibility that after days of treatment (which includes getting up a couple of times per night) the pup lives but ends up having some type of abnormality that forces you as a responsible breeder to make the difficult decision about its future. I have had this happen twice.

I am open to other ideas from both vets and breeders on this issue. If you have an opinion let me know. I will post the good ones at the end of this article.

Puppy
With luck and the proper care and treatment a pup has a chance of making it.

Here is an outstanding web page on how to administer subcutaneous fluids to dogs. It was written by the Washington State University College of Veterinary Medicine.

EMAILS from other breeders of sick puppies:

When I get a puppy doing the death cries I have had very little luck tube feeding normal amounts of 10-15 ccm. Recently I discovered that if I propped the puppy upright with a heating pad folded around it and braced with towels I was able to administer small frequent feedings until the puppy was a little stronger. Also began giving them a drop of Karo syrup on their tongues for a quick energy boost.

Another trick I recently stumbled across....
When attempting to get a bitch to take on a foster puppy or litter I smear the new puppy with milk replacer mixed very thick. I use Esbilac and have successfully gotten three bitches to take on a litter that wasnt theirs.

You have been so gracious to share your experience with the rest of the world, so I wanted to give back to you just a little.

Best Wishes,
Tony Keiser

Try inserting a lubricated red catheter feeding tube several inches into the rectum of a puppy with severe diarrhea until watery/thin diarrhea siphons out of the catheter (Be prepared, it really stinks and can flow quite suddenly at times. I cut the catheter as long as possible and siphon into a plastic bowl ½ filled with cat litter, puppy should be laying with rump at edge of table or raised surface and bowl positioned below to catch flow.). When diarrhea quits draining from tube, withdraw tube and flush with air filled syringe, once flushed draw up 5-20 cc kaolin pectin or similar anti-diarrheal into catheter and syringe and reinsert catheter into rectum several inches and depress syringe plunger to allow kaolin to coat and soothe intestines.

This can be done 2-3 times a day as needed. I have had many very ill and crying pups fall into a restful, sound sleep for the first time in days within minutes of receiving this treatment.

As with tube feeding practice makes this technique a simple, quick way to aid a sick, perhaps dying puppy with, at times, miraculous results. Make sure this equipment is kept separate from feeding equipment. Rinse with bleach water to sterilize.

You have a great web site with helpful advice,

Thank you, Diane Briggs

QUESTION:

Dear Ed and Cindy,

I called you earlier to get some feedback from you, but I was asked to contact you by email instead. I am writing you from Istanbul Turkey. I have been referring to your web site quite often these days.

Three and a half days ago I had a litter of twelve puppies. After first night I lost a puppy. The second day I lost another one, which was completely still for couple of hours and had no suckling reflex. He seemed to be pretty healthy and one of the bigger ones in the litter. A few hours ago, I lost the third one, which was chilled lying away from the rest of the litter. I tried warming him up, but unfortunately could not save him. The situation is tremendously worrying me. I am thinking that I got bacteria in the puppies.

I read an article online that recommended giving antibiotics( amoxicillin) to the mother and the puppies(if I can) for treating against bacteria. But I was not sure about it. The vets in the country seem to lack knowledge about suckling puppies as well. Given your vast experience I wanted to check if giving antibiotics can have any drawbacks on the rest of the litter that seem to be quite healthy(currently looking healthy..). There is one puppy which seem to be very weak and small compared to the others and he has been worrying me since he does not seem to be as healthy as he appeared yesterday and he is constantly whining even if he is nursing.

What would be your recommendation in such a situation like this? Should I give antibiotics to the mother? Any other thoughts?

Thanks very much for your help.

sincerely,

Pars

Whelping Puppies

ANSWER:

On three day old pups it is not an antibiotic issue. The pups should have colostrum from their mother to handle any bacteria.

When we have small pups like you have we identify each pup with a separate colored ribbon around each pups neck. Then we can look at a large litter and instantly identify each pup.

We also weigh the litter and write down weight – with a gram scale. This is done twice a day.

With small pup we put them on the bitch 10 times a day and make sure they are not pushed off a nipple. We will actually sit and watch the pup nurse for at least 15 minutes. We also may give them a few drops of karo syrup under their tongue – this is like sweet syrup-- I don’t know what you have in your country for this.

If they are small and have a strong sucking instinct I will bottle feed them.

Also, I noticed from your picture that the whelping box that you have your dog in is WAY too small for that sized dog. It also should have rails or shelves on the sides to prevent the female from laying on the pups and killing them. Please see the whelping box on the web page for a well equipped whelping room.

Properly training your dog will allow you to coexist with ease and become best pals. When your dog is well-trained, then both you and your dog will know exactly what is expected from each other. You will not have to worry about leaving him home along or taking him to public places. Though it might seem like a difficult task, you and your dog will have many rewarding times together, sharing the tricks and companionship that youve come to know through the dog training sessions.

If your dog possesses specific triggers associated to bad behavior, try to keep him busy while the temptation passes. For instance, if your dog reacts negatively to other dogs, you need to keep his focus on you as you come into contact with them. This will help him correlate the relationship between that stimuli and the positive things that come from it.

Give your puppy his own toys that he can chew to remove pain due to teething, and keep him away from chewing other items. You need to replace that with a designated chew toy. Puppies sometimes chew objects while going through their teething phase. A wet cloth that has been frozen is perfect for them during this time.

Dont give up on training your dog, no matter what. Through constant and positive reinforcement, you will be able to train your dog to retain the behaviors you teach them. Taking care of your dog must include instituting a training plan, as well as meeting his food and shelter needs.

When training your dog, always remember to have fun. Playing with your dog helps build a stronger bond between dog and human, which encourages the dog to respond positively during training. Although dog training can be fun, you dont really want to spend all your time in training mode.

Keep your dog outside while you are away from home to prevent it from chewing on your items. When this is not possible due to weather or living in an urban area, close your doors to all of your rooms. This keeps your dog out of your things. Be sure to leave chew toys out for them.

If you want to be successful in house training an animal, make sure that you stick to a strict schedule for feeding times and elimination times. This gives both you and the dog a heads up as to when they need to go outside, and you can make sure that happens before they make a mess indoors. Having a regular schedule will help your dog know that a potty break will be coming, and he will hold learn to hold his bathroom urges until that time.

Training your dog can help if your dog has a hard time being left alone. It is quite possible that if your dog frequently barks unceasingly or damages your belongings when you leave, he or she is actually suffering from separation anxiety. If you train your dog to stay busy when you are gone, it can help. While youre training your dog, its important to also show a great amount of love so your dog knows that everything is alright.

Your dog should be happy with everyone in your home so he does not suffer from separation anxiety. The dogs relationships to other people serve to dilute its unhealthy level of dependence and fixation on you that causes it so much grief.

A trick you could teach your dog is to hold something in his mouth, such as a toy. Get your dogs attention with a clicker and reward him with a snack when he tastes or mouths the toy. When this has happened several times, hold off until the dog grabs the toy with his or her mouth. As this happens, press the clicker and then offer the reward. Also, rewards should only be given if the toy remains in the dogs mouth.

Try to teach your dog good habits right away. It is far simpler to teach a dog to do something the right way than to break bad habits. If you never give your dog any scraps from table food, they will never start begging for it.

If you have a knock-down, drag-out fight with your kids or reprimand another pet, your voice could impact your dogs training. Remember: if your dog has not done something wrong immediately beforehand, your interactions should always be positive.

Get your dog ready early for his trips to the veterinarian. Move your hands across his head, back, stomach and legs, and give him reinforcement when he responds appropriately. Work with him so he is tolerant of having his paws touched and teeth examined. You could ask the assistance of your friends, too.

Dogs have tunnel vision and will focus on one thing to the exclusion of all else. If you do it enough times, your dog will wait for your signals instead of focusing on other things.

Stay consistent when training your dog. Write down the commands that you use and then make sure each person who needs to know them does. Behavior should be rewarded or not depending on the affect that is being sought. When the people around the dog use different commands and responses, he may become confused and training could suffer.

There are many different approaches that can be used to crate train a new puppy. Many dogs are intimidated by the crate. To cure this, place something they enjoy in it and shut the door. If a dog sees something in the crate that they want, they will desire to enter it. Praise your dog once he gets into the crate.

A dog needs to be trained from the outset. The sooner you start training the dog the better, because they have not learned bad habits that you will have to correct. If you never give your dog any scraps from table food, they will never start begging for it.

If your puppy is caught chewing on something unacceptable, stop him immediately. This will help your puppy understand what is acceptable and what is off limits.

Although a harness is more comfortable for dogs, it does not offer as much control as a cinch-type collar. Keep your dog on his harness, but also use your cinching collar. Tug on his collar when its absolutely necessary, and your dog will soon learn how to obey wearing the harness alone.

A clicker works well when training most dogs. Using a clicker is as simple as showing your dog that good things happen when the clicking noise is heard. Try using this technique right away, doing it frequently over a span of a few days. Your dog will soon know that the clicking noise means that they are doing a good job.

As this article has demonstrated, dog training is a very wise use of your time and energy. A badly behaved dog can destroy your house and stress everyone in the family; soon no one will want him around. By applying the information found in this article, youll be making a wise choice and helping your dog to be an enjoyable member of your family..

Teaching your dog to walk on a loose leash stops him from pulling during walks. It is not a perfect "heel" which keeps your dog strictly by your side. It allows your dog room to sniff and explore the neighborhood, as long as he leaves some slack in his leash. In other words, your dog wont be pulling your arm out of its socket as he lunges forward to get to where he wants to go. Instead, he will have to follow your lead in order to be allowed the freedom to see the sights.

Getting Started
You will need a 6-foot leash and a collar. If your dog is in the habit of pulling, he may be able to easily slip out of a regular flat buckle collar. Martingale collarsare another option. These collars are ideal for training a dog to walk on a loose leash. They look like regular flat collars, but have an extra loop that pulls tight when your dog pulls to keep him from slipping out. You should also have some treats handy.

Give the Command
Choose a word or phrase that lets your dog know what is expected of him. Since this is not a formal "heel," something like "with me" or "lets go" works well. Start out on your walk with your dog at your side, give the command, and begin walking.
Stop and Go
When your dog pulls at the end of the leash, stop immediately and do not budge. Never allow your dog to move forward when he is pulling or lunging. This way, you are teaching him that the only way for him to get to where he wants to go is by leaving some slack in the leash.

As soon as there is some slack in the leash, you can begin again. Give your dog the command "with me" and start moving forward.
Make It Rewarding
Once you step out of your house, you have a lot of competition for your dogs attention. You have to make staying close to you more rewarding and fun then running off to explore all the sights and smells of your neighborhood. For this, you can use treats, praise, and a happy tone of voice.

To start, any time your dog turns and looks at you, tell him "good boy" and give him a treat. This is also a good time to use a clicker, if you have decided to try clicker training. When your dogs attention turns to you, click and treat. In this way, you are teaching your dog that it is rewarding to pay attention to you. You can also speak to your dog in a high, happy tone to keep his attention on you.

You may need to use a lot of treats in the beginning to get your dogs attention. Keep your hand at your side and give him treats continuously, as long as he is walking near you with slack in the leash. As he gets the idea of what you expect from him, you can slowly phase out the treats by waiting longer intervals in between giving them out.

Troubleshooting
There may be times when you just cannot get your dogs attention. He might find whats going on around him more interesting than your treats or happy talk, and stopping and starting may not be enough to distract him from whatever is holding his attention. In this case, you can wait until he lets up a little on the leash, give him the command again, and turn and walk in the opposite direction. Your dog will have no choice but to follow. If he tries to step out in front of you, cut him off and keep walking. Your dog will soon learn to pay attention to you to figure out which way to go.

Nothing will be more important to your dog training success than keeping a good log. It will be your reference for years to come. This log will prove invaluable in providing you with short cuts and reference material. If kept right, it can cut weeks off your training time. The big three ring five subject binders with the pocket folders in them seem to work the best. Get one binder for each dog you train. Make headings on the pocket folders. Some suggestions - yard work, live bird training, gun training and retrieval. Then put the appropriate information in that section of the notebook.

Keep expense information in the folders. It can come in handy to know what you have spent on each dog. Yes, dog training does cost money. The receipts in the folders can help you find places you may be able to cut costs. If you are doing this for a living, the receipts will be handy for tax purposes. You need to keep several small pads that will fit in your pocket. Put the name of each dog on the front if you are training more than one. As the day’s events unfold make notes in the pad. Transfer these notes into your log binder at the end of the day. Keep this log in a safe place. As the years go by, you will see how valuable it is.

When you are out in the field jot down everything you think is important and then some. Did the dog do good or bad on this part of his training? Did you, as a dog trainer, do good or bad? Keep track of not only the dogs’ performance, but the trainers as well. Was there something that upset your dog during the day? If mistakes were made, what can you do next time to correct them? You are probably thinking, “I am trying to train a dog here. I do not have time to write all this down”. There should be breaks in any dog training session. Use this time to write your notes. Develop a kind of short hand for certain phrases. It is really easier than you think.

The day is done the dog taken care of and put in the kennel. Now is the time to transfer your notes to your big log. Don’t say, “Oh, I can do that tomorrow”. While it is still fresh in your mind is the time for updates. You will be surprised what you will forget overnight. That shorthand might not make as much sense tomorrow. You may even remember a few things you did not jot down.

If you have a computer, and everyone seems to these days, copy your loose-leaf log into Word or Notepad and save a copy to a disk for backup. It cannot be stressed enough how important this log will be to your dog training efforts. It contains what worked and what did not. It will make starting a new dog and new dog training session that much easier.

You will, over time, develop your own style and methods for keeping this log. This article just provides you with the idea and basics. Nothing is too silly or trivial to include in your log. Things that seem trivial may prove important in the end. Good luck and may all your dog-training efforts produce champions.

A dog training method called clicker training has become popular over the last several years. Clicker training differs in several ways from standard dog training. Dogs are not deprived of food. Food is only used for primary reinforcement. Punishment and negative reinforcement are avoided as much as possible in clicker training. Also, the training sessions are brief. The practice sessions should last less than five minutes each. Clicker trainers feel that dogs will learn more over several short sessions than over one long session that might get tedious and cause the dog to lose interest. Studies have also shown that establishing reliable behaviors with clicker training requires significantly less time than with standard dog training. Another difference is the use of a clicker as a behavior marker.

The click trainer clicks when the dog performs a certain action such as sitting. After the click, the trainer gives the dog a reward. Eventually, the dog will associate the click with the reward. The reward can be food such as hot dogs or roast beef, petting, playing with a tennis ball, or anything else your dog may enjoy. If you want to use a food reward, you must make sure that you use small pieces of food because you do not want your dog to be preoccupied with eating and forget about the clicker dog training. Also make sure that your dogs meals do not precede a clicker training session otherwise the food rewards will not work. It is important to remember that you must click during and not after the desired action. When the reward is given is not crucial.

A click is more powerful for training than a spoken word because it is a unique sound that signifies that a reward is coming. It can provide a precisely timed signal to mark good behavior at the exact moment that it occurs. This will allow the dog to know exactly what it was doing. Words can be spoken in different ways and express different emotions each time but the sound of a click never varies. Dogs and other pets have problems telling the differences among the many words that they hear everyday but they do not have problems determining the meaning of a click.

If you want to train your dog to come running to you when called, do not wait until the dog is actually running to you before you click and reward the dog. You should click and reward the dog even if it only takes a few steps in your direction. After the dog has demonstrated that it can repeatedly perform this action, you can try to coax your dog into walking a little closer to you before you click and reward it. You should allow your dog to do everything on its own without pushing or pulling it. You can also use click dog training to cure your dog of inappropriate behavior. Instead of berating your dog when it does something inappropriate such as relieving itself on your carpet, you can click and reward the dog when it acts appropriately.

When your dog reaches a point where it will spontaneously show you the behavior that earns it a click and a reward, the clicker trainer should teach the dog a cue. The cue can be a hand signal or a word. To teach the dog the cue, the trainer will say or signal the cue before the dog repeats the behavior. If the behavior occurs during or after the cue, then a click and reward is given. If the dog does the behavior without the cue, no click is given. If the dog does not perform the behavior after the cue is given, then maybe the reward needs to be changed or the cue needs to be relearned in an environment with less distractions. Also, while clicker dog training, do not verbally or physically abuse the dog even if it is not performing as it should. This may cause the dog to lose confidence in you and the clicker training.

The clicker and rewards can be put away once the behavior follows the cue on a consistent basis. The behavior can be maintained by replacing the expensive rewards with a less costly reward such as a pat on the head. Only bring out the clicker and rewards to train your dog to learn a new behavior or relearn an old behavior.

Since clicker training does not rely on punishment or negative reinforcement to get results, it is the only method of dog training that can be safely and effectively used with puppies that are weeks old. At this point, clicker training is not a universally practiced dog training method but more trainers are using clicker training to teach basic obedience and other classes.

The fact that you are reading this sentence implies, highlights, the fact that the title of every story should be captivating, forcing the reader to read further.

The Dachshund

This is a story ... story of a dachshund... Now, where there is a dog (as dachshund) involved, it cant be stray; there has to be an owner.

The Owner

The owner of this dachshund is a dynamic personality; very outgoing, friendly, and an air of cheerfulness and enthusiasm pervades his aura. This guy is such that anyone who comes in contact with him will come to know what life is all about; what he has been missing out on in life... This guy is one who can be called reincarnation of God.. this is not a fantasy, that is just how his nature is. So it is, that the dachshund and the owner are living happily. One fine day, the owner decides to go for a swim, and leaves the dog behind, untied. Hey! Dont call it a dog, it is a dachshund, dammit, and the names Ruby... Alright, no offence taken! So while the owner was blissfully swimming, the dachshund decides to go for a stroll...

The owner returns from the swim, and to his horror, finds the house empty.. the writing was on the wall - a missing dachshund. There was a friend of the owner ... Hes dead now, but was alive when this event took place.. the owner called up this friend of his.. the friend tried to console but the frantic owner did not listen. All he could think was that the dachshund has gone for ever; never to return. But even in this mayhem he cared for his friend and hung up.

The Friend

The friend.. this friend is a recluse; does not like to be among many people, would rather stay with select friends than being in a crowd. This is the sort of person who is very quiet, does not open up easily. He can be termed rude and crass by people who do not know him. His friends would know that he sounds rude, but in effect, he isnt. Thats the way he speaks. He doesnt drink (except water, tea, coffee, soft drinks, milk), he doesnt smoke (except air.. he smokes in and smokes out air).... This person has a friend.. the friend who lost the dachshund...

The Connection

Now how did these diametrically opposite natures come into contact, and become good friends? Ah.. that event is a mix of Gods intentions and the other persons nature... For our guy here does not like to chat without purpose; nobody will know why he was on Yahoo Chat that afternoon of January, and what made him initiate a conversation he would otherwise have avoided - this is divine intervention. It was Gods wish that they meet and be friends.

So they began their journey of friendship that afternoon of January. The dog owner thought that this guy was very nice, that this new friend of his was different from others. As months passed, each began to know each other better, and the dog owner came to know what a devil he had made friends with. He started disliking him, despising the friend.. not for unknown reasons, however.

Through these months, the friend had been very cruel to the dog owner, he just wasnt a friend! He would always hurt him with his words, he never cared for him; just kept hurting and hurting! And the dog owner, although felt bad everytime, forgave him everytime. He cried and forgave, cried and forgave. The friend, howsoever heartless that he was, was not dumb. He knew this friend considered him his true friend, and that it was only his good luck that this guy was still talking to him.

God

Now, this friend of the dog owner always believed that God does not listen to him. Although God had listened to his sub-conscious prayers, and made him meet this friend, but he still felt that God was not kind with him. When he came to know that the dog owner was now just the owner, the dog had gone, he decided to give it a try once more.

The Karma Connection

This friend was into spirituality; the thoughtful side of things. He believed that all that happened was nothing but a manifestation of the persons own doings, whether in this life or the past one. And that balance must be maintained. Do wrong deeds, your account goes into negative. Do good deeds, the balance goes into positive. One negative, one positive, balance is zero.

He felt that the dachshund went missing for either of the two reasons:

1. The dachshund had done something wrong either in this life or in the past one that he is separated from his owner 2. The owner did something wrong in this life or the previous one, that now he is paying for it by losing the dog

So he asked God to settle the balance from his account, good or bad. Just let the dachshund be with the owner, and take the payment of deeds from his account.

When someone from the family goes missing, everybody prays, and their combined prayers are heard. God listened to this guy as well, may be He thought that it is time our friend payed for all that he did wrong to his friend. So the dog returned home, six hours and fifteen minutes after he went for a walk, and our friend landed up in the hospital.

Never was our friend happier. First, he got a love(ly) message from the owner thanking him, then, he felt that finally God listened to him. He thought that now God might forgive him for all the wrong he did to his friend. From then on, his faith in God has become unshakeable, he prays daily.

This friend died last night in a car accident. His last wish was to see his friend, the dachshund owner, once in his life. His wish remains unfulfilled.

The Moral

We may be able to derive two morals from the story:

1. Have full faith in your dog. In some things, the dog is smarter than you are. He does not get lost. He will return home, always, no matter the amount of time he takes to return home. The only way you can really lose your dog is when it has been kidnapped.

2. Be good, right from the start. Respect your friends, love them, you never know what life might do to you when, and how God might want you to pay for your bad deeds. Our friend, in his course of friendship with the dog owner, won and lost a few things.

He won the love of the owner, he won the trust of the owner, he won the respect of the owner. And then, through his actions, he lost all. He lost the owners love, real love; he lost the owners trust, now there can be no way the dachshund owner may trust him; and he lost respect. Not of the owner, but his own.

The End.
