Like most dog owners, you are asking what do I do to get my dog to stop barking? There are many techniques on how to make a dog stop barking. As an owner of a pet myself, I tried everything to get my dog to stop barking. The traditional methods seemed to work for a limited time, but after a while the dog just went back to its old habits. Since I really wanted to get my dog to stop barking I went on the search to find how to make a dog stop barking. If you are a concerned dog owner such as myself, you will be asking these questions. There are many solutions, and these will be covered in turn.

Firstly, there are various dog collars and sprays which can be used. Unfortunately, if your dog is older these may not be as effective as training your dog when it is young. The most important part of how to make a dog stop barking is training your dog. Although sprays may work in certain situations it does not avoid the underlying problems such as dog anxiety which causes the barking problems.

Secondly, you can send your dog to obedience training. This can vary in effectiveness and can be costly for many people, I didn’t use this to get my dog to stop barking, but many have. If you have a puppy it is most effective, and most of these obedience classes are designed for young dogs. There are cheaper classes for puppies, sometimes referred to as “puppy preschools” where you and your dog go and learn the basics of obedience training and pet socialization (including how to make a dog stop barking) which often prevents problems such as barking happening later down the track. If you have an older dog sometimes you will need specialized obedience classes for problem dogs; these are likely to cost more money and be a lot more straining on your and your pets time, particularly when you are trying to address how to make a dog stop barking.

Third and finally, you can undertake the obedience training yourself. This is what I did to get my dog to stop barking. This is by far the most effective way as unlike obedience training which often leaves you out of the picture, if you do the obedience training yourself, you will be the one the dog listens to when you are trying to make a dog stop barking. Getting the knowledge to get my dog to stop barking was simple, I used a guide I purchased on the internet, but there are many paths that you can take to train your own dog. In the end, this is the cheapest, most effective and amazingly, the least time consuming of the lot. I have bred dogs for years and used various methods, but now all I do is train my own dogs with a few proven techniques provided by experts.

If you are ever asking how do I get my dog to stop barking, next time consider some simple training steps, it will save you the time, hassle and money; and in my experience is the best method out there.

Is your dog barking too much? It could be that youre inadvertently training him to bark by giving him attention whenever he barks. Yelling at him counts as giving attention, as does looking at him or kicking him. You know who you are! Dont do it.

Even if youve got a pup from the Hound group (who is hereditarily hardwired to bark while hunting, such as a Beagle, you can still win this battle -- peacefully) practice both the long-term and short-term solutions here, stay consistent and practice daily, and you can solve this barking problem.

First and foremost, the thing to remember with a barker is the same thing with any other behavior issue:

When a behavior is reinforced, it will increase in frequency.

When a behavior is not reinforced, it will decrease in frequency.

Long-Term Bark Stoppers

These are to be practiced continually whenever you are not doing the short-term exercises.

§ Keep all departures and arrivals very low-key. This is very important. When you or family members come home from school or work, quietly let the dog outside and dont greet him in any way whatsoever until at least 5 minutes later. This is hard for kids or anyone owning a puppy, but its crucial to avoid emotional displays which announce your comings and goings. Making a big deal when you leave or come home will increase the likelihood not only of owner-absent barking, but bona fide separation anxiety

§ Ignore all barking unless you are certain that the barking is signaling something extremely important. Ignoring does NOT mean saying "Quiet Rover" when he barks - it means remaining quiet yourself when he barks!

§ Do not even look at your dog or turn your head toward your dog when he barks. Doing so reinforces the behavior! Hes just looking for some way to get your attention and believe me, hell notice your eyes moving because hes watching you.

§ Praise "Good quiet, Rover" and walk over to him to give him a little treat several times during the day when he is just sitting around not barking. He can be doing just about anything else, but if he is quiet, praise him and call it what it is. Believe it or not, hell figure out what hes doing right sooner than you think, and his "quiet" behavior will increase.

§ If you got a breed known for barking (Hounds such as beagles) accept it and modify your expectations. Be realistic about leaving him alone inside or outside when you cant hear him; if hes bothering the neighbors, you may have to get him into a daycare.

§ Exercise, exercise, exercise: 2 hours of brisk walking (or running) daily is a minimum for barkers, who need an outlet for their energy. He should be walked on a leash away from your home and/or run in a safe area away from your home. Not only does this tire him out, but it desensitizes him to the sights, sounds and smells of your neighborhood - rendering them less "barkworthy" than when they were unknown.

§ Playtime and obedience in your yard. If youre not playing with him for at least 30 minutes daily, start. Fetch, chase, tug, and hide & seek are all great games to play with your pooch and will tire him out and enhance your relationship.

§ If you have to leave your dog outside while youre gone, give him a digging pit, a wading pool, lots of toys and agility-type obstacles that will keep him busy and happy. Installing a stockade fence through which he cannot see will also reduce the barking.

§ Never leave your dog tied up outside. Youre just asking for noise (and possibly aggression) anytime anything happens in the vicinity.

§ When you can communicate with your dog and learn to give him attention for the good things he does, hell be less frustrated, more responsive to you, and much less likely to bark. Enroll in an obedience class at a positive reinforcement facility (see the Trainer Search at http://www.apdt.com for ones in your area).

If youve already taken obedience, try agility, flyball, tracking, or Canine Good Citizen to stimulate his mind and body.

§ Dont bother yelling at your dog for barking. Some dogs interpret this as your attempt to join in the barking chorus! And all dogs know that getting yelled at is getting more attention than they were getting before they barked!

§ Bring him to a cage-free dog daycare once or twice a week. The staff there are very likely to practice barking control, but more important hell learn quickly that proximity to other dogs is not necessarily reason to vocalize.

Short Term Bark Stopper: Put the bark on command

If you train your dog to bark on cue, youre in control of most of his barking. And if you can concurrently train him to Quiet on cue, youre happy! Youll need a helper for this exercise, and youll need to practice it several different times on different days , maybe 20 minutes each time. Your helper may be different or the same each time as long as they can follow your directions.

First, tell your helper to go outside your front door. Instruct him that in 5 seconds he should ring the doorbell. Close the door with you and the dog inside. Count to 4 seconds and command your dog to "Speak!". If your timings right, your doorbell will now ring, setting your dog up for his predictably barking frenzy. You have now started to associate the command "Speak" with your dogs barking.

After a few seconds of barking, command "Quiet" while holding a treat right in front of your dogs nose. He will stop barking in order to eat the treat. You may praise him "Good quiet" while he chomps on his treat.

Now youve not only associated the command "Quiet" with him ceasing to bark, but youve also associated being quiet with something yummy, along with your verbal praise which he also loves. This starts your dog on his long and happy relationship with being quiet when told to do so.

Repeat this exercise 5-10 times in each daily session. You should be in control of your dogs barking within only a few short days!

If you cant get him into a group class, order a good positive reinforcement training video such as Positive Puppy Training at http://www.dogdaysusa.com/positivepuppy.cfm and practice as much as you can.

Dog disobedience and aggression are things dog owners will most likely always have to deal with. You are not alone in this boat. About 75% of dog owners have some type of trouble with their pet. Surprisingly a lot of these owners do not even get help. They let their dog walk all over them until something bad happens. This could be an attack, or even your dog ending up dead. Both of these are horrible options, especially when with just a little work you can have your dog trained. The longer you take to control and train your dog, the harder it will be for you to train it further down the road. So do you and your dog a favor, and get help.

Dog disobedience can include:

* Biting
* excessive barking
* fighting other dogs
* whining
* and of course relieving themselves inside

There are many other issues you might be having with your dog. I just listed the basics.

Not only will these problems embarrass you, but your pet could seriously injure someone.

That is when the real problems start.

Your dogs disobedience can sometimes be caused by poor guidance by the owner, not knowing how or what to say to your dog, and not using the proven strategies.

The good thing is all of these problems can be fixed before they get real bad. You can sometimes fix a problem with an older dog, but obviously they will need more work.

You know you cannot teach old dogs new tricks(Well not always). Some types of dogs are easier than others to train. Some might be a little more trouble. Either way, its not to hard if you know the right steps.

Why is my dog a barking dog?

Babies cry, dogs bark. It is their way of communicating to us their needs and wants. Babies cry when they are lonely, sad, hungry, bored, sick or when their diaper need to be changed. Dogs will bark for many of these same reasons, well, with the exception of the whole diaper thing. But they may bark when they need to go out. Learning the meaning of your dogs bark takes time, but eventually you will begin to develop an understanding of what your barking dog is trying to tell you.

To understand why your dog barks, you have to run through a mental list of what your dog is telling you. Is your dog hungry or hurt? Are they in need of a walk? Are they trying to announce a visitor or worse an intruder?

The first thing to realize is that dogs do not bark for no reason. Barking is a dog behavior that at times may seem unrelated to anything, but the truth is when a dog barks there is always a purpose and a reason.

Often times your dog will actually point with his or her nose in the direction of what is so concerning him or her. If you are studying the dogs behavior you will notice this is often their way of communicating. If your dog starts non-stop barking this means that your dog has a need that is not being met. Be sure to watch their other means of expression and communication in hopes to determine what exactly it is that they need. Some barking requires meeting easy needs like providing water, food, or simply a visit outside. . There are other reasons for barking behavior such as separation anxiety, fear, or dominance issues that are more complex. While these situations require more attention, time and specific training, it is very important to address this barking as overlooking it could potentially progress to aggression or destructive behavior.

Once you understand the reason for your dogs bark then you will be able to fulfill or correct the behavior

Barking dogs not only act similar to crying babies, they can also act like a defiant teenager. If your dog barks back at you after being disciplined, you have a "typical teen" on your hands. This dog is in need of a refresher on who is the boss or alpha.

Regardless of what your barking dog is trying to convey to you, it is always important to remain patient. Remember, your dogs goal is to please you and at times they are just trying to express their needs and wants.

If your dog spends a lot of time outdoors, there is a good chance that it will see many visitors, strangers, or other animals. When your dog sees any of these, it will start to bark repeatedly, annoying you or the people in the homes around you. The dog will only stop after whatever it sees is out of its sight and away from your yard.

To understand how you must stop your dog from barking, you must know why dogs bark at these things. Some people think that it is its nature and a dog is supposed to bark to defend its territory from anything or anyone that approaches. Others think that a dog barks because it is scared and fears whatever it sees, such as someone who is not its owner. If you have a home with thick windows, the barking may not annoy you as much, but it will make everyone else angry. Strong windows or not, if your dog barks repeatedly, especially during the night, it needs some obedience training. To stop the barking, teach you dog some easy phrases such as "its ok" or "no, stop barking" and reward it with a treat. It is not going to be easy and your dog it not going to stop barking overnight, but if you keep at it, it will understand. If you do not want to spend time training your dog, you can simply build a fence in the yard. The fence has to be high enough so that your dog cannot see beyond it and when it is built, the only thing your will bark at will be squirrels and your visitors.

Speaking of visitors, if you dogs barks constantly when someone enters your home, you can use the same method, obedience training. Training your dog to behave around guests is a bit different depending on whether the person visits you regularly or not. For example, someone you have hired will only visit you a few times until the job is done. If your dog barks at this person when inside the house, just move the dog into another room until the person is gone. A friend that visits you will require a different approach; you start by allowing your friend and your dog to become friends. Have your friend visit you daily so that your dog becomes comfortable and over time it will stop barking. The most difficult method is anytime your relatives visit you and stay with you for a few days. If your dog normally stays indoors all the time, you will not want to put it outdoors if it does not have a doghouse. With relatives around, you are not going to have any free rooms to send your dog to and even if you do, the dog will have to come out at some point. To stop your dog from barking at your relatives, bring him into the room with everyone and calm him down. You can do this by taking your dog to its favorite spot and then give it a treat. Stay by the dog to help it feel secure, because remember, its barking in fear. After an a while, it will stop barking and then you can focus on spending time with your family.

A barking dog can get annoying, however, there is a benefit; a barking dog will always alert you when someone is in or near your yard. Sure, sometimes it will bark at another dog or a squirrel; however, many times it will be someone in your driveway. You will also know when someone is heading towards your door before the person knocks.

If your dog barks all the time, you can train it to stop on command or build a fence to block its view if it barks outdoors. When guests arrive, if it is someone you hired, move the dog until the person is gone, for relatives and friends, make the dog comfortable with them. Training takes time, but once you have a dog that stops barking on command, everyone will be happy.
