Vegetarian dog treats are becoming more popular as more dog lovers become concerned about meeting the nutritional needs of the four-legged members of the household. However, there are a still people who are not sure what is in these types of treats, and where they can find them. Here are some things you should know about these treats, and my they may be ideal for your dog.

One of the problems with many commercial treats for pets is that they contain a lot of animal by-products. In some cases, this may mean that your pet is getting a higher amount of fat in the diet than you would like. Because a vegetarian dog treat is free of animal fats, the treat will not promote the accumulation of fatty deposits throughout the body. Your dog will retain a lean figure, and there will be fewer worries about being able to control and maintain your dogs weight.

Another important thing to keep in mind is that a vegetarian dog treat is not short on essential vitamins, proteins and other supplements. In fact, the treat will actually be easier for your dog to digest, since all the ingredients are vegetable based. Many people do not realize that natural organic matter can be an excellent source of protein, and one that contains none of the other elements that could have adverse effects on the long-term health of your pet. Look for vegetarian treats that contain a rich balance of greens, legumes, and similar vegetables, and your dog will be healthy for a long time to come.

Finding a vegetarian dog treat is not as hard as you may think. Many health food stores will carry vegetarian alternatives that are both tasty and nutritious. Local pet markets may also include a few vegetarian based dog treats that are made locally, and completely free of any preservatives. You can even go online and find several vegetarian dog treat options that are especially created for various breeds, ages, and sizes of dogs. While you will pay a little more for a vegetarian dog treat, keep in mind that you are helping to ensure that your beloved pet remains happy and healthy for a long time to come.

Why is my dog a barking dog?

Babies cry, dogs bark. It is their way of communicating to us their needs and wants. Babies cry when they are lonely, sad, hungry, bored, sick or when their diaper need to be changed. Dogs will bark for many of these same reasons, well, with the exception of the whole diaper thing. But they may bark when they need to go out. Learning the meaning of your dogs bark takes time, but eventually you will begin to develop an understanding of what your barking dog is trying to tell you.

To understand why your dog barks, you have to run through a mental list of what your dog is telling you. Is your dog hungry or hurt? Are they in need of a walk? Are they trying to announce a visitor or worse an intruder?

The first thing to realize is that dogs do not bark for no reason. Barking is a dog behavior that at times may seem unrelated to anything, but the truth is when a dog barks there is always a purpose and a reason.

Often times your dog will actually point with his or her nose in the direction of what is so concerning him or her. If you are studying the dogs behavior you will notice this is often their way of communicating. If your dog starts non-stop barking this means that your dog has a need that is not being met. Be sure to watch their other means of expression and communication in hopes to determine what exactly it is that they need. Some barking requires meeting easy needs like providing water, food, or simply a visit outside. . There are other reasons for barking behavior such as separation anxiety, fear, or dominance issues that are more complex. While these situations require more attention, time and specific training, it is very important to address this barking as overlooking it could potentially progress to aggression or destructive behavior.

Once you understand the reason for your dogs bark then you will be able to fulfill or correct the behavior

Barking dogs not only act similar to crying babies, they can also act like a defiant teenager. If your dog barks back at you after being disciplined, you have a "typical teen" on your hands. This dog is in need of a refresher on who is the boss or alpha.

Regardless of what your barking dog is trying to convey to you, it is always important to remain patient. Remember, your dogs goal is to please you and at times they are just trying to express their needs and wants.

There are so many different things that everyone should know, when it comes to dog training and actually doing something that works. Many people tend to have so many misconceptions about dog training and it is a great deal of the reason as to why so many dogs run around untrained and misbehaving for their owners. One mistake that is constantly made by dog owners is, punishing the dog in order to teach them. This will only get you so far and for the most part you will just be talking to yourself because you will not get the response from your dog that you had hoped for. The only way to get a dog to listen to your commands or to pay any attention to you at all is to get to know your dog and show them that they can trust in you right from the start.

Many owners think that spanking their or yelling at their dog is the only way to ever get them to listen and this just could not be more incorrect. Rewards, praise and the right kind of dog training, for whatever it is that you are trying to teach them, is the best way to get the results that you had been hoping for and really the only way, other than just hiring a professional dog trainer to take over the training of your dog.

The dog owners out there that are just doing things all wrong are usually the ones that just end up giving up on the entire thought of trying to actually train them, which is not going to get them anywhere. The best thing that you could do, as the dog owner, would be to really consider picking up some dog training books for yourself because in these types of books you will be able to find out about all different types of dog training techniques and what works, as well as what does not work for any dog out there. The amount of knowledge that you will gain from reading over these types of books should be enough to make it possible for you to learn how to train them properly and the techniques should end up working.

Another important thing to keep in mind when trying to get into dog training any dog is to never, under any circumstances, ever over train your dog. Spend just a limited amount of time in each day, working on some of the different dog training techniques that you have learned from doing the research and then just leave it at that, until the next day anyway. If you try and do too many different things with your dog, all in one day, your chances of it actually being a success are just very, very small. Just try and stick to a routine, just like you would with children, this is truly the best way to become successful at dog training any dog out there, no matter what the situation is.

One of my students mentioned in class that they knew the reason their puppy wasn’t learning things as quickly as he could was because they needed to be better about carving out time to train each day.

My response may surprise you.

“But I don’t have TIME to train…”

Many people believe that training a dog requires a big time investment, but training a dog to be a good family member and to understand basic manners doesn’t have to involve a long commitment in terms of time.

In fact, the results are often much better if, instead of training twice a day for 15 minutes each time, dog owners work small training opportunities into their every day routines.

For example: You want your dog to learn to hang out and relax during TV time at night. The best time to train? Work on his “place” command during the commercials—just turn down the sound!

Want a few other ideas for finding time to train during your day? Check out the list below.

15 Real-Life Opportunities to Train:

1.       During commercial breaks while watching your favorite TV show — just turn the sound down.

2.       While your bagel is toasting.

3.       While your coffee is brewing, tea is steeping, or the microwave is working on your next meal.

4.       While on the phone (remember, you don’t need to give commands when you’re capturing good behavior; this is also the perfect time for practicing hand signals).

5.       While on the toilet (sits, downs, even “come”).

6.       Two minutes before your walk — don’t indicate the walk in any way, just start running your dog through his commands. Reward each correct response. After the last one, say, “Good dog! Want to go for a walk?” and go get the leash. This is a jackpot!

7.       Two minutes before the dog gets to go on a car ride (see above).

8.       Every time you let the dog in our out a door, including potty breaks (ask for “sit” or a “down” before you open the door).

9.       Every time you put down a food or water dish (ask for “stay” or “leave it” before releasing them to get it).

10.   While playing fetch (ask for a “sit” or “down” or other trick before throwing each ball).

11.   While your computer is warming up, shutting down, or downloading that slow e-mail or website.

12.   When you walk out to pick up the paper or mail (wait at doorways, walk on a loose leash, etc.).

13.   Every time you start an interaction with your dog. Don’t interact with him unless he is calm and polite – especially when you first come home. Ignore him (pretend he’s not there, give him the cold shoulder) if he’s being wild or noisy.

14.   During mealtimes—teach your pup where he’s supposed to be and what he should be doing!

15.   Whenever your dog does something right without you telling him to! That means you can stop to give him a belly rub when he’s laying calmly by the door or grab him a chew when he goes and lies down on his own while you help the kids with their homework.

Working your training into your day is a great way to break up training time into manageable chunks and to teach your dog how to be a well-behaved member of the family.

But…

It’s important to remember that just because you practice at home doesn’t mean that your dog will be able to do those same behaviors everywhere you go. Dogs are very bad at “generalizing” behaviors.

What does that mean? That means they need to practice behaviors in many different places before they understand that a command isn’t specific to one place or person.

In other words, it is unrealistic to expect your puppy to respond to your cues in other environments outside of your home unless you practice in all environments. He does not “know better” because “he does it at home” — he doesn’t know better. You must teach him.

Remember: Training Should Be Fun (For Both Of You)

Your puppy should love to do things for you and you should get a sense of success and feel proud of what you and your puppy have accomplished.

In order to get this you must make sure that you are giving him plenty of rewards for good behavior. Remember, thought, rewards don’t have to be treats—rewards are anything your puppy perceives as fun and rewarding. Examples include dinner, walks, a ride in the car, treats, play, hugs, eye contact, and “sweet talk.”
