Training your dog is among the most important aspects of your pets life. Training your dog is something that will be repaid to you over the future years because you will have a happy and healthy dog who respects your family and listens to you when necessary. Learn more about dog training with this article.

Obedience classes are good ways to train your dog to follow your commands. The trained instructors can help your pup with any issues he may have, including unnecessary barking, chewing, house training and normal obedience issues.

The best time to start training a dog is when its a puppy. Much like human children, puppies learn faster than adult dogs. Beginning your dogs training when he is still young will help him to be a well-behaved dog as he ages.

Unless breeding is in your dogs future, make sure he or she is spayed or neutered before six months of age. This should be done at the same time you start obedience training. A dog that is fixed will be more willing to learn. You and your pet will enjoy a longer and happier life together.

Be careful not to spend too much time at once training your dog. Your dog will get bored and antsy if you spend too much time on one thing. The first few sessions especially should be kept under 10 minutes.

There is no denying that dogs possess certain innate urges and behaviors, and therefore it is necessary that they be allowed to exhibit them on occasion. Dogs require a nutritious diet, space to run in and activities and toys to keep them busy.

Your dog should always give you its attention when asked. When a command is reinforced properly and often enough, your dog will begin to shift his focus from the distractions around to you in order to wait for your signal.

If you are attempting to crate train your dog, remember that it is a multi-step process. As soon as they start to feel comfortable in the crate when the door is open, try closing the gate and have them eat inside. Only keep the gate closed for short periods of time at first and increase time slowly. If the dog becomes agitated, slow down a little more to make them more comfortable.

If you catch your puppy chewing something that he should not be chewing, put an immediate stop to it. Get some toys for your puppy to chew on and make sure he understands the difference by scolding or praising him.

When training a dog it is important to teach him good habits from the start. It is easier to instill good habits than it is to deal with bad ones. To avoid begging at the table, avoid giving the dog food off the table to begin with.

Have a blast during each training session with your dog. By playing games with your dog, a strong bond will develop between the two of you, which helps the dog respond in a positive manner during training. Training can be a fun experience, however, getting some enjoyment for yourself and the dog through play is a good thing.

Dogs with separation anxiety can benefit from training. Separation anxiety can cause your dog to misbehave while you are away, like non-stop barking and destructive chewing. It is possible to train your dog to refrain from such activities and control himself while he is alone. Doggy nerves can also be soothed by showing your pet plenty of affection.

Be aware of what foods and treats your dog loves the most. Your dog will work harder to get the food that he/she loves so much. Take note of how your dog responds when he is given his reward.

When you want to have success at dog training, understanding what your dog is motivated by is half the battle. Dog training can be a learning experience, especially with it comes to determining what motivates your pet. Offer your dog a lot of positive reinforcement and an array of training techniques. A contented puppy will perform well, and be easier to train.

Keep track of how many treats used to reward your dog every day for a healthy diet. It is easy to forget about treats when you consider how much you are feeding your dog. This can happen especially when you are training him.

Do not allow your pet to become complacent in his training. Establish a clear set of rules and stick with it at all times. A lot of times owners thing training is a one time event. However, pets are ruled by habits, structure and routine in much that same way that humans are. You must remain strict with your dog.

Dog training may be expensive, but its money well spent. A dog that does not behave in an appropriate manner will cause a lot of unneeded stress and damage, leading to families questioning whether to give the dog up. Use the information here. Choose to train your dog and your dog will be a pleasure for everyone.

WE NEED YOUR HELP!

We have a population of stray cats in our area. The cats are being provided for as far as food. The problem is that cats multiply very quickly- there has already been another litter this month. In fact, the population probably started out at 2 or 3 cats and has multiplied to many more. If we continue to let the population grow, Animal Control will get involved- trapping and killing them.

What Can We Do?
Luckily, there is a solution. Trap/neuter/release (TNR) is the only method proven to be humane and effective at controlling feral cat population growth. With TNR, all the feral cats in a colony are trapped, neutered/spayed, given vaccines and health checks and then returned to their territory where caretakers provide them with food and shelter. Young kittens that can still be socialized, as well as friendly adults, are adopted out to good homes.

Why TNR?
The returned colony guards its territory, preventing unneutered cats from moving in and beginning the cycle of overpopulation and problem behavior again.
Another significant advantage to TNR is that, when practiced on a large scale, it lessens the number of kittens and cats flowing into local shelters. This results in lower euthanasia rates and the increased adoption of cats already in the shelters.

We Need You!
In Raleigh, NC we have organizations that are lucky enough to help out populations such as ours. Normally, a spay/neuter costs around $250. That does not include shots or health checks. Operation Catnip has been contacted and we have been accepted for their services! For $25 a cat, we can solve this problem. We are asking for your donations to help our cat population- every dollar helps! As winter approaches, non-monetary donations (food, old dog houses which can be used as shelters, traps, etc) are very helpful as well!
To Donate:
Please provide cash or checks payable to ‘Operation Catnip’. The money must be sent as a group, so they know which colony it is for and that we have been approved. Please bring or send all donations to: 2009 Trexler Ct. Raleigh, NC 27606

Questions? Please e-mail cmherbst@ncsu.edu or hlpainter@hotmail.com

Thank You!

One of the most commonly held beliefs about dogs is that they are quite literally born to obey their respective masters - be they male or female. Thats why we all collectively consider dogs to be mans best friend. Obedience is not necessarily something that comes naturally to dogs and to be honest often has to be trained into them with compassion and patience. Your dog needs to learn how to obey commands so they know how to behave around your home, people and of course other dogs and animals.

Obedience training in dogs is to allow you to "control" the dog. Remember dogs think and act with a pack instinct to a certain extent and this type of training is vital so that the dog knows who the master is in your relationship. In effect youll become the Alpha male of this particular small "pack". The methods used to achieve this final goal vary from one trainer to the next but the ultimate goal is the same - the dog has to obey their master; its to the benefit of all involved.

So what actually makes a dog obey their master? They (dogs) dont think the same way as humans do and dont understand our spoken language as such. So what are the core techniques to making a dog obey you? Its quite simple really... you need to train your dog in a consistent and compassionate manner and theyll respond. And you thought it was going to be rocket science eh?

Having a consistent approach in your training is critical. Dogs dont think logically as humans do. You need to be consistent in showing your dog what behaviors you appreciate and those that you dont. This way it can become more "instinctual" for the dog and theyll quite happily obey you and your dog/owner relationship can truly blossom.

Compassion is equally important. Even the smartest dog will take time to learn new commands from you. If your canine buddy doesnt instantly respond to a new commmand then dont scold, slap or shout at him or her. Your dog needs to trust you for your training to be truly effective and lets face facts nobody likes getting yelled at - dogs are the same in this regard.

Your dog is willing to obey you but hes going to take time to learn the ropes. Be patient, compassionate and consistent in your approach and youre already 50% of the way to success.

Is your dog misbehaving? If so then visit DogTrainingHelper where you can discover lots more dog training tips and learn lots more about dog training with positive reinforcement.

Every dog requires training to some extent in order to learn what to do and of course, what not to do. These tips should help you train your dog.

There are a lot of tricks you can teach your dog to do; a common one is training him to hold a toy in his mouth without chewing it. Use a clicker to give the dog a treat whenever the dogs uses his mouth to hold a toy. After a few tries you should allow the dog to pick up the toy on his own. As soon as the dog does this, use the clicker and give a reward. If he holds it in his mouth, you can give him a reward.

Your puppy may need obedience classes so that it can listen to you. The instructor can give you ideas about how to handle problems like not listening, and excessive barking.

Teach everyone in your family to use the same commands to train your dog. For example, if your dog were to jump on the table and you say "off!" but another family member says "get down!", these conflicting commands will just confuse the dog. Consistency in the command phrases will make training easier on everyone in the family, including your dog.

Training should be an enjoyable activity for your dog. Try not to make training sessions any longer than 15 minutes. That will keep his attention. Keep your rewards coming and vary what you give them. Make sure you shower praise on your dog when they do well. When the dog enjoys their training, they will listen better.

Always give your dog the tools for success. If you are training it to stop chewing things it shouldnt be chewing on, give it things that it can chew on. Even more so, an inappropriately-chewing dog needs to be protected. Some household items can be harmful to your dog if they are chewed upon.

When your dog reaches six months, make sure that your dog is spayed or neutered. Obedience training should be put off until this is done. Any dog not "fixed" will be very excitable and easily distracted in obedience sessions. This will make your dog easier to train.

Training a new puppy can be much easier if everyone in the the family participates in the training. While they may have a single person working with them regularly, getting everyone involved can enforce that they must always follow the rules and it will make it more consistent.

When considering the possibility of hiring a professional to work with your dog, look into their background, reputation and conduct an in depth interview with them. Many animal behavior specialists have opposing opinions on how to correctly train dogs. Be sure to verify that the trainer you hire has similar ideas as yours, prior to implementing any of their tips.

Communication is one of the essential aspects of training your dog. During your dogs training sessions, keep your signals and commands clear and consistent. The signals you send to your dog include not only rewards and corrections but also your tone of voice and your body language. Remember to always pay attention to the communication signals from your dog. Your dog can let you know how hes feeling, like if hes having a bad day or is worn out.

Keeping your dog active is an important part of successful dog training and is also good for their health. Dogs are designed to keep busy and active. They need to get plenty of good exercise to be happy and fit. Look for a local agility class, go for a run with your dog or teach him to play catch with a Frisbee. Keep your dog well entertained and you will eliminate many of the common problems, such as chewing on shoes.

Do not quit when you are training your dog. If your dog doesnt get reinforcement for his current level of training, hes likely to slide back into how he acted before he was trained. Much like providing your pet with food, training is a continuous process that is never truly finished.

To have success in dog training, you need to be able to control it with commands. You have to show your dog that you are in control or he will not obey or respect you. When walking with your dog, always walk first, never let your dog lead, as this is the leadership position.

Training should be fun for your dog. Only train your dog in ten to fifteen minute sessions. A dog has a limited attention span so any longer will cause him or her to become bored. Be sure to provide rewards often, and give different treats from time to time. You should lavish praises on your dog for following your instructions. The more enjoyable training is for your dog, the more he will look forward to it!

Pay strict attention to your body language and tone of voice anytime you are training a pet. Dogs can be very perceptive and can pick up cues from their owners about how the owner is feeling. A firm but stern tone should be enough to reinforce discipline.

You will find dogs are simply dogs. Allow for activities that let him be himself and have fun. Dogs need to eat well, a spacious run, and lots of toys and interesting things to occupy their time.

Using a clicker can help them behave better. Using a clicker is simple. Use it to make a good association between the noise and when something good occurs. Try clicking and treating immediately, and doing this several times over a few days. Your dog will soon know that the clicking noise means that they are doing a good job.

If your puppy is caught chewing on something unacceptable, stop him immediately. This will help your puppy understand what is acceptable and what is off limits.

Although a harness is more comfortable for dogs, it does not offer as much control as a cinch-type collar. Keep your dog on his harness, but also use your cinching collar. Tug on his collar when its absolutely necessary, and your dog will soon learn how to obey wearing the harness alone.

You can prevent your dog from destroying your home by keeping it outdoors when you are away from the house. When this isnt possible, you want to provide things that both appeal to your dog and that are okay for the dog to chew on. Establishing acceptable chews toys is also about keeping those things you do not want your dog to chew up behind closed doors or well out out of reach.

After learning some helpful hints on how to get through to your dog and train it to behave to your expectations you simply need to follow what you have learned. After changing your dogs behavior to fit with the tips suggested you can properly train your dog..
